Attention
to fine details in homes of grand stature is a winning combination for the father
and son team comprised of Irwin and Andrew Koop. Even their most modest homes
feature distinctive style lines and designs. "We don't pull anything out of
plan books," says Andrew Koop, who makes biannual visits to show homes in the
United States for inspiration. It was south of the border that he first came
across the American loft, a concept these custom builders have incorporated
into their latest show home in Pritchard Farm Properties.
Located in between the master
suite and the other bedrooms, the loft is accessible to
all
members of the household, making it an ideal space for a home computer or reading
area. The creation of open space, including the great room concept, is an idea
espoused by Irwin Homes. On the other hand, the builder is careful to maintain
a careful balance between open space and private areas by incorporating such
features as a main floor den.
This idea was in response
to many customers expressing a need for "a place where they could close the
door." As a small company, Irwin Homes prides itself in truly being able to
listen and understand its customers' needs. Explains Andrew Koop, "If customers
change their minds midstream, we are able to
implement the changes without stress or a significant increase in cost." He
adds that both he and his father are on site every day to make sure work is
on track. This "what we say is what we'll do" attitude has helped the Irwins
build a reputation as honest and reliable builders.
In Pritchard Farm Properties, they enjoy being able to take full advantage of the large lot widths to explore a number of design options, including making the garage an almost invisible amenity. Blending the construction of the home into the heavily treed lots has also been an important consideration. "I'd like to see more trees kept when areas are developed," says Andrew Koop. "Here, they didn't just bulldoze everything. It's nice and it's only going to get nicer."
